How affordability is worked out

Affordability looks at what is left after essential costs and existing commitments, not just whether someone has a clean credit file. This calculator subtracts housing, essential bills, living costs and existing credit repayments from net income to show disposable income, then shows how a new repayment would affect it, plus a debt-to-income ratio.

Lenders assessing affordability for real use Open Banking to verify these figures from actual bank data rather than estimates. See affordability assessment and debt-to-income ratio.

This tool gives a rough estimate for guidance only. It is not a lending decision, credit or financial advice, or a regulated affordability assessment. Figures are illustrative.
