The State of UK Credit Union Digital 2026

By Jim Fell, CEO and Co-Founder, Credit Canary

We audited the public digital presence of 93 UK credit unions, the way a prospective member sees it: how easily they are found, how fast their sites load, whether they measure anything, how their reviews read, and whether members are protected from spoofed emails. Using public information only, collected 17-18 September 2026. The headline findings are below, free to cite with attribution to Credit Canary.

What we found

Most are flying blind

Measurement is the biggest gap

Nearly a quarter (22%) run no web analytics at all, and 46% have no modern GA4 analytics. 32% have no cookie-consent tool. Without measurement, a credit union cannot tell which channels bring members or where applicants give up, so marketing spend is a guess.

17 of 72

The join journey is slower than the homepage

For 17 of the 72 credit unions where we could measure both, the join or borrow page, where members actually convert, scored worse on mobile than the homepage. That is the worst possible place to lose people, right at the finish line.

63%

Email safety is a member-protection gap

63% have no enforced DMARC policy. That means a fraudster can send convincing emails appearing to come from the credit union, and members have no automatic protection. It is cheap to fix and a genuine safety issue, not just a technicality.

15 of 33

Google and Trustpilot often disagree

Among the 33 credit unions with ratings on both Google and Trustpilot, 15 differ by a full star or more. A credit union can look weak on the site most people check first and strong on the other. The median Google rating is 4.4; the median Trustpilot score is 3.9.

26% / 22%

Search basics are often missing

26% have no useful meta description, so Google writes their search snippet for them, and 22% have no XML sitemap. These are quick wins that affect how easily a prospective member finds the credit union at all.

76/100

The median digital health score

Across the 93 credit unions we ranked, the median digital health score was 76 out of 100, a blend of search, speed, measurement and reputation. The gap between the best and the rest is almost entirely down to fixable fundamentals, not budget.

Method and citation

All figures come from Credit Canary's audit of 93 UK credit unions with a live website, using public information only (live pages, robots.txt and sitemaps, PageSpeed Insights, Google and Trustpilot profiles, and public DNS records), collected 17-18 September 2026. This is passive analysis of what each site already shows every visitor; no site was scanned or tested for weaknesses. Automated checks catch roughly a third to a half of real accessibility issues, so the true figures may be higher. These are a prioritisation guide, not a verdict on any individual credit union.
